Unsound returns to London and the Barbican on 8th December as part of its Dislocation series. This follows Unsound Dislocation festivals in Almaty and Minsk, and upcoming events with lineups soon to be announced in Murmansk, L’viv and Kazan.
Unsound Dislocation: London will explore geography and identity through three shows, including Unsound-commissioned works, a world premiere, and audio/visual collaborations. Together these works will take the audience on a journey through the UK, Poland, Arctic Russia and beyond.
NIVHEK (Liz Harris/ Grouper) performs alongside visual artist MARCEL WEBER, also known as MFO. Performing After its own death, the result of a residency in Murmansk, located in the Russian Arctic; the work is paradoxically minimalist, both harsh and dreamlike, exploring landscape, nostalgia and isolation via sound and image. After its own death is commissioned by Unsound, the Barbican and Goethe-Institut.
A rare live performance by THE CARETAKER aka LEYLAND KIRBY of V/VM marks the Krakow-based artist’s first return to his homeland in six years. The Caretaker draws on a mysterious collection of vinyl records to create music that explores disintegration, memory and time. The performance draws from an extensive project exploring dementia via six albums released over a three year period. In this world premiere, video for the piece will be created by WEIRDCORE, a visual collaborator of Aphex Twin.
Soft Power sees London-based electronic musician FELICITA join forces with traditional dancers from ŚLĄSK SONG AND DANCE ENSEMBLE, the most renowned company of its kind in Poland. This Unsound-commissioned work synthesizes traditional choreography and costume with new music to create a hypnotic multimedia experience. The concept stems from Felicita’s childhood education in traditional dance, exploring folk culture, national identity, tourism, branding, illusion and farce. Soft Power is co-produced by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute as part of its Polska Music programme promoting Polish music worldwide. The Barbican presentation has been produced as part of the international cultural programme accompanying Poland’s centenary of regaining independence.
Following the Barbican Hall performances, Lebanese-born and Berlin-based artist RABIH BEAINI takes to the Barbican’s ClubStage to play one of his intense and characterful DJ sets incorporating techno, jazz, music from the Middle East, Indonesia and much more.
