Redline presents 20 Years of Rush Hour with Antal and Hunee

  • Redline has hosted both of these Rush Hour all stars respectively, now they're pulling out all the stops to give this Dekmantel-closing duo a chance to go wherever they wish.
  • ANTAL As a DJ and ‘musicologist’, there are few more serious than Antal. Trying to sum up the musical world of the Rush Hour founder with a few loose signifiers like house or techno would be futile. Sure, everyone in the industry claims to have been music obsessives since youth, but few have taken it as far as this Dutchman. As a DJ who prefers proper tools like E&S or Rane rotary mixers and Dope Real isolators, since 1996 he has played all across Europe, Australia, Asia and both North and South America. Unlike many, though, he has a wealth and depth of music to call on that is so vast you never quite know what you are going to get: he is as comfortable spinning Chicago and Detroit influenced house as he is rare Afro funk, forgotten disco and everything in between. Of course, Antal also runs the mighty Rush Hour Records in Amsterdam with a close group of hard working people. It’s a vast empire that encompasses a reliable distribution wing, sub label Kindred Spirits as well as a much-loved record store chock full of vinyl bought during on-going crate digging trips around the world. The label, meanwhile, releases house and techno from the vanguard at the same time as re-issuing long forgotten classics that serve to educate whole new generations about what has gone before. You could say Antal himself serves the same purpose when DJing. HUNEE Every DJ would like to think themselves a real musical connoisseur, but Hunee really is - it’s not him that says so, but pretty much anyone else whenever the man born Hun Choi pops up in conversation. His DJ sets have of course taken him all over the world from Aus to Asia, America to Europe, but they take listeners much further. As likely to draw for a classic house record as he is a disco curveball, a boogie delight or mixing an African bomb into a techno record, each selection he makes is a thing of true passion – you can see it not only in his eyes, but so too in the eyes of those dancing along.Reporting that he feels blessed every time he gets to play music for people, Hunee’s sole goal is to enrich the lives of listeners as much as possible. His own productions have always managed to do that, too. So far they have proven to be hugely considered and cultured things that have arrived on labels like Rush Hour, Future Times and W.T. Each one is different but each one has a certain kinked funk, true sense of soul or loveable house heritage that puts them up there with the best of the rest.Along the way Hunee takes inspiration from people who “live it to the max, to the bone” and considers himself to be just part of the way along a never-ending journey. As such, the future promises more such delights for this notoriously deep digger in the form of a debut album on Rush Hour in 2014. “I just try to do my own thing,” he says humbly, and no-one could argue with that.
