- The Berlin-based post-rock trio will issue their eighth album via Domino next year.
To Rococo Rot have put the finishing touches to their latest album, earmarking it for a March release.
The trio of Stefan Schneider (who is also one-half of Hauntologists with Jay Ahern) and brothers Robert and Ronald Lippok have long experimented with electronics in their music, fusing textures, sounds and drum machines into their avant-garde post-rock style. For their latest album, entitled Speculation, the group moved to the studio of Krautrock legends Faust to record their sessions, something which Schneider admits informed the loose and flowing nature of the music. "The technical set up at the studio is very basic and regular in a good way," he explains, "so we could record our music almost like a band playing a live show in order to achieve maximum brilliance and plasticity."
It wasn't just Faust's studio that affected the record, with Jochen Irmler often joining in with their improvisational sessions. "He would just start to play something on his self-built organ which we would accompany," continues Schneider. "The sound of his organ is absolutely unique and sharp and therefore fitted very much to the roughness of our recordings." The main idea behind the album is to explore the relationship between tension, release and the uncertainty between these two states; but instead of doing this through extended freeform jams, the group have managed to rein in all but one of the songs on the album to under four minutes long.
