- Danny Berman will release the first album from a new project in January on Sonar Kollektiv.
Danny Berman, AKA Red Rack'em, will release his next album under a new name: Hot Coins.
The record is called The Damage Is Done, and it strikes a very different chord from Berman's deep house material as Red Rack'em. Stylistically, Hot Coins takes inspiration from the mixture of post-punk, synth pop and disco that arose in the late '70s and early '80s. Thematically, it tackles the dark side of club culture, with lyrics about the loneliness and confusion that can result from its excesses (e.g.: "good friends are hard to find... when you're out of your mind").
The Damage Is Done will come out on Sonar Kollektiv. According to the press release, it was recorded in rural Austria "on the world famous ex-Townhouse studios SSL 4000 B series desk which was used to mix Public Image Limited's Metal Box album and 'In the Air Tonight' by Phil Collins." Though Berman has been working on Hot Coins material for the past four years, this will be the first time any of it sees the light of day. Guest appearances come from City Hayes and Crazy P member Chris Todd among others. Berman himself sings on a few tracks too.
The album's first single, Geek Emotions, is out this week. You can stream that track right here.
