  • D-Man has released a 12-inch on Workshop. The six-track record is the first solo 12-inch from Dirk Mantei since an untitled EP on 800trak records released back in 1997. 800trak, which was managed by Mantei, was a sub-label of Source Records, the seminal techno label run by David Moufang, AKA Move D, and Jonas Grossmann from the early '90s to 2005. Mantei was a longtime key figure in dance music around the southwestern German cities of Mannheim and Heidelberg. He launched an acid house night called Planet Bass in Heidelberg in 1988 before opening the club Milk! in Mannheim in 1990. Along with DJs like Holger "Groover" Klein, Bassface Sascha, DJ Seebase and Gregor "G.O.D." Dietz, he helped to introduce UK styles like bleep, hardcore and jungle to the area. (Andy Baumecker cited Mantei as his favourite DJ in a feature published back in 2012.) Much documentation of the scene has been carried out by Finn Johannsen on his own website and for Electronic Beats. Workshop 25 is available now on digital and vinyl. Listen to clips on Hard Wax. Read a Label Of The Month feature on Workshop. Watch footage from Milk! filmed by Holger "Groover" Klein.
