- Phase III documents the final years of the band between 1988 and 1995.
Melbourne label Left Ear Records will release Phase III, a compilation of works by German band I.A.O., in January.
The group, originally named Inandout, underwent personnel changes after its first release in 1983, reaching what the label calls its third phase between 1988 and 1995 with final members Ralf Östereich, Carsten Zielske and frontman Achim Kohlberger.
Out on January 20th, the 16-track, double-LP retrospective spans downtempo synth work, electronic soundscapes and angular jams, all tied to a period of political unrest following the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Kohlberger is particularly known for his partnership with Atonal Festival founder Dimitri Hegemann. Together, they established two legendary Berlin clubs: UFO and, later, Tresor.
