  • Dawn Richard and multi-instrumentalist composer Spencer Zahn have collaborated on an album. Arriving October 21st via Merge Records, Pigments tells a story of resilience and self-actualisation through dance, self-expression and community. Unlike Richard's previous works, which centred on R&B and dance music, the new LP finds the New Orleans-based artist working within jazz, contemporary classical and ambient electronica. Richard and Zahn collaborated with a team of musicians on the 11-track LP, including Stuart Bogie and Doug Wieselman (clarinets), Mike Haldeman (guitar) and Malcolm Parson (cello, violin and viola). "I felt like the tools that I and other people like me were dealt weren't shiny," Richard said. "Yet we still painted these beautiful pictures. This album is what it means to be a dreamer and finally reach a place where you've decided to love the pigments that you have." Pigments follows Richard's Second Line, her 2021 debut album on Merge. Previously, the pair collaborated on Zahn’s 2018 debut album, People of the Dawn. Watch the video for "Vantablack," directed by Richard.
