  • Irish club Cuba Galway is reopening after 13 years. After last weekend's soft launch, the venue will host official opening parties from Thursday, March 28th, through Sunday, March 31st, with Neil Landstrumm (who will play live), Rob Rua and more playing on the Sunday. The club has a Funktion-One sound system. "We felt Galway needed a platform for more alternative sounds like bass music, dubstep, techno, house and more leftfield genres, in order to thrive and have an audience," promoter and booker Ian Harte told Resident Advisor. He said while upcoming events will feature international acts rarely seen in Ireland, there will also be a "heavy focus" on platforming local collectives and artists. "We hope to open up the venue as an arts space for creatives and street artists in the community," he added. The venue will also host record fairs, open-decks nights, singer-songwriter nights and jazz and poetry events. FKA Cuba, the three-floor building on Prospect Hill closed in 2011. It was later leased out by pub chain McGettigans—which currently occupies the ground floor—in 2016. Cuba Galway will take over the first floor, which Harte said has been "mostly dormant." Harte said there are also plans for opening a bigger second floor later down the line. Scroll through the events listing below for more details.
