  • Richie Hawtin is working on his first hardware drum machine. Made in collaboration with Latvian firm Erica Synths, Bullfrog Drums is a seven-voice, sample-based digital drum machine. Few details have been released, but Erica had a prototype on its stand at the Berlin synth show Superbooth last weekend. Bullfrog Drums looks like it will allow users to upload sampled drum sounds and then control their pitch, attack, decay and drive. These can be applied to individual steps as well as globally to a sound. Bullfrog Drums can also store and recall different kits, and has a 16-step sequencer, pattern chain, randomiser, ratchets, shuffle, accents and probability controls. Everything is controlled through a simple interface that uses the large computer keyboard keys you find on a Roland TR-909. At the same show, Erica Synths demonstrated an XL version of its Bullfrog synth, designed primarily as a teaching aid, as well as its latest FX box, Nightverb. Due to be released this summer, Nightverb is a stereo reverb that offers extremely long decay tails, pitch-shifting and a custom algorithm designed to create enormous ambient textures. Watch a demo of Bullfrog Drums from YouTuber motobor.
Bullfrog Drums is expected in 2025, price TBD. Nightverb will be available this summer, price TBD. Bullfrog XL is available from June 19th, priced €1,700.
