  • As mainstays of New York’s underground house and techno scene since they began in 2006, Blk|Market Membership and its residents Taimur Agha & Fahad Halder have been instrumental in building the rapidly growing New York dance community to where it now stands. They initially met through a mutual friend after having already separately witnessed many of the premier residencies of late ‘90s’ and early 2000s NYC in its famed clubs, including Sasha & Digweed’s legendary stint at Twilo and the equally renown era of Danny Tenaglia and Deep Dish at Vinyl. Following the dissolution of much of the club scene post 9/11 and its retreat to the underground, the pair enthusiastically pursued it while working on their own musical ideas, and when Bill Patrick, Nick Ac, and Dennis Rodgers parted ways after their run with ROBOTS, they handed the torch to Taimur & Fahad to become the new leading lights of a re-established dance culture that would take the city into its next nightlife era. Following a one-year residency in the Lower East Side, the duo then began collaborating with Mehmet Erkaya. Together they transformed Erkaya’s Bar 13, a multi-level bar and terrace, into a mainstay of New York club music, and soon invitations came from storied clubs LOVE and Cielo to help them build their budding operation. The end of Minimoo coincided with their rise to the top of the warehouse party scene, and nearly simultaneously Taimur became head buyer at NYC dance music institution Halcyon Records, a position he would hold for 6 years, while Mehmet deepened his involvement in the crew by taking over production duties at their increasingly massive warehouse events before moving on to launch TBA Brooklyn in 2013. Their list of accomplishments from 2006-2014 reads as a who’s who of contemporary artists from the era, hosting debuts from the Wighnomy Brothers, Cassy, Art Department, San Proper, Jamie Jones, MyMy, Reboot, Quennum, Skudge, Rødhåd, Mike Dehnert, Apollonia, Matt Tolfrey, and many more, as well as the returns of legends like Laurent Garnier and Scan X’s L.B.S. project, Carl Craig, Moritz von Oswald, and Francesco Tristano’s live Versus 2.0 event, and a rare 2013 appearance by Dan Bell as DBX. Margaret Dygas, Robag Wruhme, DJ Koze, Innervisions’ Ame & Dixon, Barem, and both the Mobilee and Bpitch Control labels continue to enthusiastically make regular appearances for the crew, Secretsundaze holds current a residency with them, and they have been honored to host past residencies for Craig Richards, Scuba’s SUB:STANCE, Ostgut Ton, and Cocoon Heroes. Also high on the priorities for Blk|Market Membership has been to recognize those who inspired them, and they have enthusiastically brought formative influences like Sasha, Digweed, Michael Mayer, Lee Burridge and Craig Richards’ Tyrant project, Adam Beyer, Luke Slater and many, many more for long-awaited appearances at their events. New York’s rapidly rising club and party scene are creating new alliances, and the opening of new megaclubs in Brooklyn since 2013 has brought new opportunities and new challenges. After six years of success as buyer and head of the A&R wing of distribution for Halcyon, Taimur at long last devoted himself full-time to his own DJ career and to the management of his labels and still-growing nightlife empire. As much of the nightlife in New York has gone above ground to the new clubs, Blk|Market Membership has continued to keep the underground scene alive with off-the-grid events that carry on New York’s warehouse legacy. 2014 has seen more progress with a new monthly residency at the prestigious Nouveau York party at Le Bain and the launch of both the eponymous Blk|Market Membership and Taimur’s own Higher Frequencies label. With 11 years of history and accolades under their belts and a resume thick with accomplishments, Blk|Market Membership hold an esteemed position as architects of New York’s contemporary dance scene as well as guiding lights for its future.
