- Randomer has been involved in the dense exchange of ideas around avant-garde UK labels Hessle Audio and Hemlock for a while now. But where others have opted for oppressive darkness or an urbane lightness of touch, Rohan Walder's tunes have always felt like party music first and foremost—as evidenced by his Hemlock debut earlier this year, the razor-edged but infectiously bouncy two-tracker Scruff Box.
We Laugh We Scream continues the trend. These three tracks are unmitigated party bangers, clearly concerned with moments of screwface-inducing dance floor impact above all else. That's not to say they lack subtlety, though. The clattery breakbeat acid of the title track could perhaps have benefited from a clownish stomp to pin things down; instead it stays light on its feet for the duration, its beat peppered with rolling jungle cross rhythms. It's an effective blend, but the relentless, gurning energy of it starts to get wearisome over its six-odd minute length.
"Nar" is far more succinct, laying a synth string riff reminiscent of UK Funky over a warehouse electro backbone. As usual, the track's searing heat emanates mainly from its bassline, which blisters and squelches with expertly contained aggression. "Freak Dub," though, is the real highlight, a low-slung breakbeat stormer which fosters irresistible funk out of remorseless precision. Randomer's hybrids always seem so striking, so self-evident in their construction, that you're amazed nobody thought of making them before. In the current climate, We Laugh We Scream was, if you'll excuse the expression, screaming to be made.
