- Murlo might be one of the most exciting new artists in UK dance music. His DJ sets are often blindingly fast and a reliable source for new and exciting tunes. That includes his own—he's got a unique ear for production, gussying up grime with a specific set of MIDI sounds that makes his work instantly recognizable. It's a testament to what he's built in such a short time that even Jasmine, where he pushes his established production tics to the background, still sounds unmistakably like Murlo. The first release in a multi-record deal with dancehall label Mixpak, Jasmine pulls him away from dance floor and into the pop realm.
Both tracks feature Gemma Dunleavy, a vocalist with a sweet, Brandy-ish voice. Murlo pares down his beats to leave room for her, which can be a big adjustment for a producer, yet Murlo easily clears this hurdle. Of the two, "Deep Breath" is less of a stretch. With its gloriously synthetic strings and jerky bassline, it feels standard Murlo with some of the midrange scooped out. "Jasmine" is the real winner, built from the ground-up with dazzling piano figures and a soft bassline that sounds like a musical jug. Here, the framework is so delicate that it's almost transparent, showing that Murlo's gifts aren't limited to the club.
