- In the past, the Zenker brothers' Ilian Tape label has dabbled with compilations, but the Bias Jams series would appear to signify a stronger commitment to the format. On the A-side, this first one features two of the label's previous signings, plus two new ones on the flip. Imugem Orihasam leads off with "Internal," a delicate slice of dub which recalls Voices From The Lake's recent album in the way it pulsates organically. Throughout, a tiny, metronomic clanking sets up the mood, supported only by minute changes elsewhere. When big things do happen—the introduction of a cymbal or rippling dub chords, for instance—the impact seems profound. From a fledgling Serb by the name of Regen, "Black Puff" isn't so subtle. It does, however, impress with its command of melody. Like placid waves, its blunt chords rise and fall with a beautiful rhythmic intensity.
On the other side, Lucas Mari gives off the impression that he's been hanging out with fellow Argentinian Jonas Kopp, another of Ilian Tape's artists. His big, flabby kicks and caustic hats are exactly like those Kopp favours. The similarities end there, however. Where Kopp's work is mostly dark, "Paper Tape" is lacquered with glistening strings and a cheerful synthesised whistle. It's warm and inviting, despite the pounding underside. Last, Stenny's "Orbital" solidifies the vague Detroit influence running through the rest of the record. It's archetypal loop techno, featuring a rapid and constantly-rising organ sequence spooled out over shunting hats and claps.
