- At this point Livity Sound might be the most inspired label in Bristol. Over the past few months they've released two 12-inches that are about as bold and imaginative as dance music gets: Pev's Aztec Chant and Alex Coulton's War Games / Pointe Noire, the latter of which came out on Dnous Ytivil, a side-label for artists from outside Livity's core trio (Peverelist, Asusu, Kowton). Their hot streak continues with Velez / Rendering, the latest two-tracker from Asusu.
Like the best Livity Sound tracks, "Velez" brings out the architectural qualities of rhythm. It's a sequence of angular percussive loops, carefully arranged to form a complex but perfectly balanced whole—you get the feeling that if you slipped one out, the whole thing would topple in on itself like a Jenga tower. There's nothing here aside from drums, but there doesn't really need to be—the stop-and-start rhythm is catchy enough on its own. "Rendering," with its standard 4/4 rhythm, feels conventional by comparison, but it's just as elegantly constructed, and a bit warmer thanks to some ambient flourishes and a single soothing chord. Both feel impossibly tidy and well-honed, and reflect a sense for composition that's somewhere near flawless.
