- Audion, Matthew Dear's twisted techno alter ego, has never been as easy to love as the dark electro pop he makes under his birth name, but there's no doubting his gravitational pull when it comes to attracting remixes. Daniel Avery takes a classical, melodic approach—think Slam—on his reworking of "Sky." Deep, bassy synths punch out the rhythm accompanied by swirling top notes, before it breaks down into a choppy, juddering breakbeat. The Scuba remix of the same track finds him in good form, descending into dark and sweaty house through an overload of reverb, finger clicks and juicy bass.
San Franciscan Charles "Matrixxman" McDuff is given two opportunities to prove his star is in the ascendancy. His "Singularity" remix of "Motormouth" is an express-train ride of squelching bass, percussive vocal snippets and clanking beats, while his "Replicant" version works Adonis-like claps into oppressive synth murmurs and snail's-pace acid blips. It's not quite light and shade, but it's evidence of McDuff's depth of vision.
