- Last time out, Rob McAndrew unveiled something of a musical makeover for his Airhead project, moving from post-dubstep themes into tougher, more dance floor-focused material. Five years after James Blake's debut for Hemlock Recordings (McAndrew plays guitar for Blake, his childhood friend) he follows him onto Untold's label with two tracks that mix tectonic bass, serrated rhythms and bundles of samples.
Military drums, searing Bomb Squad-style horns and bass drops that shake the room like Godzilla's footsteps are the headline features on "October." McAndrews has cited the influence of DJing at the 1-800 DINOSAUR parties for the shift in focus; on this evidence those nights must have taken him into the dark recesses of his soul. While the 4/4 thump that underpins "Macondo" may hint at a more traditional approach, it's accompanied by a set of squeaks and crumpled percussion that maintain the EP's healthy non-conformist attitude.
