- Russia's Art Crime made a minor splash with last year's "Release," six minutes of effortlessly groovy piano house that was hard not to get swept up in. With its follow-up, Obsession, he moves from WT Records to Phonica and homes in on what he does best, which means, yes, more piano. What might seem like a one-dimensional approach comes to life on this EP, as keys are used in four different ways to great effect.
On the exquisite title track, the piano floats on the breeze kicked up by the galloping drums and wistful pads. The more introspective mood continues on "Eye Contact," where piano lines double up and bleed into each other. "Rise Fall Run" takes a utilitarian foundation—kick drums and a ringing two-note melody—and jazzes it up with baroque keys, while "Show Interest" puts the lead instrument in service of its strident groove, modulating the piano in the same way techno producers play with repetitive synth chords. It's no easy feat to carve out a signature sound after only two EPs, but with Obsession Art Crime has done just that.
