- D. Carbone makes intelligent techno masked as something meaner. Like the rest of his Repitch buddies, the Italian native treats the club more like an old French salon, a space for exchange and enlightenment through music. On his EPs for 3TH Records, his label with Ascion and Lucindo, Carbone has set psychological themes to abstract and heavy soundscapes, keeping his thoughtful approach in tact. Ravers might be the most lock-jawed effort yet, but behind the breakneck speeds and crusty Bunker-punk aesthetic there's a sense of purpose fueling the fury.
Ravers isn't a revivalist record. Far from it: instead of emulating the bygone era of rave, Carbone refracts its sounds (303s, 808s and 101s included) and their histories to create his own seething club dystopias. From the maniacal acid rumblings of "Orius," to the synthetic rush of "Space Journey 1171" and "Mustacid"'s anxious high, the record is a precarious journey that could sour at any moment. Once we reach "Hard Vision," the nightmare is so engrossing that we need "ESX" to give us some air. Ravers is a record to get lost in, but not the way we used to.
