M. Geddes Gengras - Interior Architecture

  • M. Geddes Gengras has always made long tracks. Many of his pieces last for more than ten minutes, and some even push beyond a half hour. But Interior Architecture is his most extensive album. Across two LPs and 73 minutes, the LA synth artist takes all the time he needs to fully develop his ideas. As he weaves sounds through patient transitions that never feel forced, Gengras creates a seamless work in which each individual element supports the greater whole. You could say that Interior Architecture is a culmination of Gengras's work so far, especially since it was recorded over the course of six years. He touches on many of the styles he's used in the past, including drone, minimalism, techno and modular synth-based ambience. The music melds together so well that it becomes hard to imagine these sounds existing in any other context. Each side contains multiple tracks, but without pauses or breaks. Gengras orchestrates well-timed ebbs and flows, telling wordless tales with discernible beginnings, middles and ends. Whether it's the bassy tones dissolving into underwater rattles on side A, the rippling electronics and dark hums of a clarinet on side C, or the plunging beats building to a droning crescendo on side D, the changes in Interior Architecture are all part of a crafted narrative. In fact, Gengras's ability to slowly construct such arcs explains why he called this album Interior Architecture. He's essentially building sonic environments, the kind a listener can enter and explore. That experience is less about the details than the journey, which Gengras carves out with the skill of a seasoned designer.
