- Club No-No is a label, event series and production project by Snorre Magnar Solberg, a Bergen-based artist in the same universe as DJ Sotofett and SVN, with whom he's collaborated in the past. It's easy to see why he gets along with those guys. Like them, he has a skewed and minimalistic take on club music that's all about texture and atmosphere. But while Sex Tags and SUED often conjure warm, balmy settings, Club No-No explores an altogether darker place. No-No 4, a pair of murky thumpers from Solberg, Kristoffer Drevdal and DJ Fett Burger, is no exception.
Both tracks here sound like they're bobbing and weaving through a dusky swamp—an effect achieved in part through heavy panning and lots of bird calls. "No-No 4 A," by Solberg and Drevdal, is a tunneling groove assembled from gummy kicks, woody toms and a pad as soothing as it is eerie. On "No-No 4 B," essentially a remix of the A-side, Fett Burger keeps the pad and the swampy atmosphere but fleshes it all out more. This 15-minute epic is full of small but unexpected moments, like the breaks that flutter in after seven minutes, the chords that come out of nowhere a while later and the rain and thunder in the beatless coda. I'm partial to the simpler original, but both are vivid, hypnotic and impressively banging, if in their own dark and woozy way.
