Pablo Mateo - Drive Setting

  • Pablo Mateo's strength is plump and warm party tracks, but that's not the only music he makes. He usually throws a curveball on each record—like "Xzzyl," the 11-minute, minimalist sketch on last year's Dekalog, or "Zwei Körper," an ambient track for 777's sublabel FFF. There's also his work with LACKREC., who has put out his laidback tunes alongside extreme acid affairs. This range of interests amounts to a style that's friendly but not forgettable, which is still very much the case on the producer's latest for Florence label Uncage. Most of Mateo's records are upbeat, extroverted and even kind of goofy. Drive Setting, though still full of dance floor pumpers, has a slightly darker edge. The title track and "Going Oreo" are both thick and thumping, but the latter swings a bit bigger, with cold piano stabs and throbbing kicks that are easy to get lost in. The transience continues on the B-side to even more impressive ends. At nearly nine-minutes, "Book Of Poison" is the out-there addition spicing up this EP. It's a deep, melodic epic with melancholy at its core. Nick Höppner's airy remix is perfectly suited to a happy comedown, but the intensity of Mateo's original is the record's high point.
