- Epic is in. The news seems to have reached Chris Liebing, whose first solo record in eight years sits somewhere between Afterlife and Alva Noto. "Novembergrey," the first track from his new partnership with the legendary Mute Records, is big and gloomy, the kind of minor-key techno tune that's taken over raves headlined by artists like Tale Of Us, Recondite and Stephan Bodzin. It's a surprising change of direction for Liebing, who's best known for high-energy loop techno and the even more energetic style called schranz. It's classier than most of the tracks in this style, with a focus on atmosphere and weepy melodies that never feel overbearing. Even so, "Novembergrey" is the latest in a barrage of tracks that toy with the same sad mood, so you won't find much originality in its sombre chords.
