  • Although they have different styles, Acronym and Kali Malone have more in common than you might think. Acronym, a techno producer, is one of the more interesting affiliates of Abdulla Rashim and Varg's Northern Electronics label, while Malone is known for improvisations with acoustic music and the pipe organ. Based in Stockholm, both artists explore evocative soundscapes with a focus on rhythm and texture. For The Torrid Eye, released on Acronym's new Stilla Ton label, Malone brings a Buchla 200 modular synthesizer and other analogue equipment. The result isn't too far from either producer's individual output, although it's more fuzzy and flatter sounding than Acronym's career-defining 2015 album, June, and Malone's vivid audio-explorations on Velocity Of Sleep. "Call From The Tower" hums with static as a synth line rises from the mist like a distant foghorn. "A Sunspot" glows with a mid-frequency square wave as a melody plays alongside a steady and muted four-on-the-floor kick. The growling bass distortion of "Legs Of Fly" carries through to the snarling ambient of "Tarmar," where a woman speaks in Swedish. It's not the only language Acronym and Malone share.
