  • As the driving force behind Death In Vegas, Richard Fearless has collaborated with everyone from Liam Gallagher to Sasha Grey, covering a broad range of styles—big beat, kosmische and industrial, to name just a few. But since the '90s, Richard Fearless the DJ has preferred techno and electro, spanning from Metroplex to braindance. He's taken a circuitous path to get to his shipping container studio on the banks of the Thames. It makes sense, then, that he's found a fellow traveler in Daniel Avery, whose Song For Alpha was a masterful recombination of influences found in Fearless's DJ sets. They first met at Andrew Weatherall's Rotters Golf Club studio. Avery's own studio now occupies a shipping container next to Fearless in London's Docklands, making their PSSU project feel like it was bound to happen. We're lucky it did. Their first 12-inch leads with "307309," a remarkable sad electro-acid track fitting into a continuum encompassing Tin Man, Fit Siegel's "Carmine" and Model 500's "Pick Up The Flow." The moody techno of "Fabricated From Steel" is more conventional. Its undulating air-raid synths would fit in well at one of Fearless's regular Tresor gigs or in the depths of one of Avery's all-night sets. It's a promising debut from Fearless, a London veteran, and Avery, an apt pupil turned star.
