- Psychedelic beats.
- You know when you're listening to a Red Axes track. Since 2010, Dori Sadovnik and Niv Arzi have forged their own brand of psychedelia, overlaying circular, hip-shaking drum patterns with bleeps, warped vocals, guitars, gummy basslines and other curiosities that make their tracks functional yet full of personality. After the success of last year's Sipoor on Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound, they've returned to the label with more loose-limbed party tunes that reflect the temperature of their Tel Aviv hometown. "Sound Test"'s detached, prolonged countdown, delivered like a spaceship captain to her crew, is bound to inspire audience participation in the club, even if the takeoff feels a little muted.
On "Shabak Shalom," snapping drums are joined by rattlesnake synths and in-your-face bass, both regular guests at Red Axes bashes. Droney guitars amplify the dusty mood while the percussion roots the track to the dance floor. Kindred elements pop up in "Kookoo Papa," along with cryptic distorted vocals reminiscent of "Sipoor". It's the most boisterous cut on a festive EP, with ravey synths dominating the mix. Where an LP full of similar tracks might grow tiresome, it's hard to not like this gift of three bangers.
