- Head-spinning experimental club.
- It would be a ludicrous understatement to call Swan Meat's new EP overwhelming. Her style of experimental club music has long been confrontational, but on Fleshworld, it becomes a dizzying sequence of references and samples programmed to shock and awe. The Cologne-based American cuts ideas from a wild range of styles—Hollywood soundtracks, video game music, moombahton—and then makes Frankensteined genres out of them, an aesthetic reflected in the mecha-heroine on the cover.
At times the EP seems to go off on another tangent with each new bar. "Eugenia Marionette" starts out as big-room drum & bass before melting into a piano breakdown and resurfacing as slinky dembow. There's a surging melody worthy of an anime intro song, delicate harp-like melodies and operatic vocals in between. You could spend a lot of time trying to isolate and unpack every reference on Fleshworld, if the EP ever gave you a moment to breathe. The world of experimental club music, with its intense sound design and allegiances to aggro genres like hardstyle, can seem like an arms race among producers. Fleshworld outmaneuvers everyone by looking at the molecular level and engineering next-level tracks from there.
