- The latest LuckyMe release finds a sweet spot between K-pop, experimental club and alternative rap.
- Wuga means "caveman" in Korean. It's also the title of Jung Eui Suk's, AKA Omega Sapien's, new EP, released by Scottish powerhouse LuckyMe last month. A weird and wonderful smorgasbord of bubbling hyperpop, trap, alt-rap and leftfield K-pop, the record features heavyweight production from Baauer and an impressive cast of collaborators that includes Sega Bodega, Foodman, Machine Girl, Felicita, Golin and DJ Paypal.
The Sega Bodega-featuring "Plum" is a major standout. Plucky angelic vocal licks, flutes and a profoundly deep sub-bass set the scene for Suk to wax deftly about the bible, acid trips and pulling up in a Hummer. As with most Baauer productions, the drums are astronomical, while Sega Bodega's distinctive androgynous vocal harmonies appear in the second half of the song adding a dynamic new layer.
Omega Sapien is the principal player in Balming Tiger, a fast-rising collective in the experimental K-pop and alt-rap scenes. Suk and his gang of merrymakers are making waves in experimental circles today and, hopefully, are destined for bigger things tomorrow.
