Subb-an - Synchronicity

  • Four beautifully strange tech house tracks from a master of the genre.

  • Ashique Subhan, AKA Subb-an, has been one of the most consistent tech house producers of the past decade-and-change. He started out making rolling, filter-heavy anthems for Crosstown Rebels and Visionquest, but got trippier and leaner on releases for Fuse, Pleasure Zone and his own One Records (run with longtime confidant, Adam Shelton). On his latest 12-inch, Synchronicity, Subhan gets even weirder. All four tracks have that undeniable tech house swing, but the mood shifts quickly, from the claustrophobic bleeping of "Synchronicity" to the haunted arps of "Salvia Apiana" into the spacious sweeping chords of "Higher Frequency" before ending with the broken breakbeat spiritual "Atlantis." We're a long way from DC-10, but Subhan proves that tech house has a lot of life—and room to explore—left in it yet.
