Charonne - Break Thru

  • A (slightly) darker sound from Paris's young guard.

  • In 2021, the Parisian duo Charonne left their mark on contemporary French dance music thanks to their landmark LP, Innervoice. Across three discs of video game-like synths, comic vocals and flubbery basslines, they reimagined the French touch as Daft Punk for the after-afters. Now they return with a new EP that inaugurates their label, Velvet Spirit. They keep the same elements from Innervoice, but the mood is darker. On "Break Thru," for example, the 303, wiry synths, and even vocals aren't so much bursts of sunshine, but sinister transmissions from some back alley. The drums still have swing to them, but it's a track designed for when the sun has gone back down again and the party is nearing its final stretch.
