  • If you like the sort of '90s-reminiscent house that bubbles rather than boils, odds are you've come across Thorgerdur Johanna. The Oslo-via-Reykjavík DJ and producer has an impressive CV, turning out podcasts for outfits like LowMoneyMusicLove and making regular cameos at beloved clubs like Club Der Visionaere and Hoppetosse. But other than a slept-on 12-inch with partner A:G, we haven't heard much from her in the studio. This makes her first solo release "The Ride" all the more tantalizing. Released as part of a gargantuan compilation raising money for Ukraine, Johanna kicks it off with a sparkling stardust arpeggio. But just as you get ready to lock in for an extended bit of daydreaming, she fires off a ferocious, reverb-crusted synth, like Marcel Dettman crashing in and cranking up an unexpected channel. If at first it's a bit disorienting, Johanna yins the yang with skittish electro drums that hold the whole track together.
