- Sometimes dance music criticism is down to one question: Does it kick? Deetron's newest 12-inch most assuredly does. Unlike the vast majority of builders that lose their power a few minutes in, Deetron has set up "Zircon" in such a way that it picks up a new element at just the right moment to keep you on board...and even has a surprise for those willing to give it some time to unfold. The rapidly ascending and descending synth blurt isn't much, but when paired with the unyielding beat and yet another instance of the same melody, it gets to the unbearable—or, rather, kicking—point.
"Zircon" swings, a rarity in the techno builder business, and so does "Orange," which has a housier feel. That tune has the de rigueur irritant keyboard sound at its outset, but soon jettisons it in favor of a woodblock and a popping snare. As is the fashion, a looped sample pops its head in for the heart pounding build-up, but here it's welcome rather than cliché. Credit Deetron for figuring this one out, as I wasn't sure I was ready to hear yet another soul singer plying his wares over a mechanical thump. That he makes it pump with such ferocity? Who knows? All I can say is that it kicks.
