- Rush Hour continue their work in making some of the finest dance music available to wider audiences here by reissuing two Rick Wilhite EPs originally put on on KDJ in the mid-'90s. It's hard to tell which is better. The most important thing to come of all of this, though, is the reminder of Rick Wilhite's enormous talent. Wilhite has never been hugely interested in maintaining a profile via a consistent stream of tracks. And he's often forgotten behind bigger names such as Moodymann and Theo Parrish.
Wilhite's contributions to 3 Chairs and The Rotating Assembly, though, are undeniable, and these two EPs prove that it was hardly lack of talent that was holding him back. "Drum Patterns & Memories" is sublime deep house with a hook that Moodymann can't help but EQ gleefully to full effect on his two mixes, while Wilhite turns it in a more docile direction. "Dreams of Yesterday," meanwhile, sneaks in under the radar, with a stomping percussion track that loops like a soulful cousin of Mike Huckaby.
Theo Parrish couldn't keep his hands off the similarly looping "Get On Up!!" on Soul Edge, which foreshadows and arguably makes Mannheim deep house irrelevant in only a few minutes. This stone-cold classic is followed by a trio of mixes of "What Do You See?" that arrive to pump up the funk. Each mix largely follows the same celebratory format, with subtle changes in the EQing that should make finding the perfect mix for the prospective DJ a very pleasurable task indeed.
