- For a minute there, Frenchman Cédric Marszewski, AKA Pilooski, almost turned into Quentin Leo Cook, AKA Fatboy Slim, with his breakthrough edit of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons' "Beggin'" verging on "The Rockafeller Skank" ubiquity. Thankfully, he hung up the disco edit persona for more banging house fare as half of Discodeine (with Benjamin Morando). Whether or not this is Pilooski's farewell to the edit genre is still up in the air, but this single-sided 12-inch does mark the end of NYC's RVNG Intl.'s Revenge of the Nerds disco edit series, a ten release 12-inch run that was head-scratching as often as it was head-whipping.
Mock & Toof taking a Nigeria 70 cut and running into the stratosphere with it? Yep. In Flagranti dicing Kiss to the point of ludicrousness? Check. Lovefingers editing the wicked Diabolic Man? Sweet. Terje housing-up "Horse With No Name"? Uhhh... Optimo wading through their squatter-punk collection for a brutal series of edits? Strange but true. Fittingly, Pilooski flashes a bit of oneupsmanship over them all, taking the inscrutable perfection that is Nora Dean's "Angie La-La" and stretching it out to tantric lengths. Nothing could possibly top this idiosyncratic Duke Reid production that is unmatched in the history of reggae, but Pilooski keeps it simple by just making it last a bit longer. Easy but effective. Should the joke still not reveal itself to you, flip this 12-inch over and dig how record nerds always triumph.
