- If his latest release as Lawrence is any indication, it's safe to say that Peter Kersten does not suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder. The record's title waves goodbye to the daylight, its three lush, downtempo tunes embracing a nocturnal solace. Or wait, maybe it's the other way around: maybe the guy gets S.A.D. so badly that only producing warm, melancholic deep house gets him through those sunless months? In any case it's great record if you're planning to dj a cabin anytime soon, or an après-ski gathering—its fireplace vibes add new meaning to a "warm-up" set.
Sorry Sun strikes a bit of an upbeat note in comparison to its predecessors. "Just Like Heaven" is a nicely peppy number with a big hi-hat and gorgeous cascades of piano matched with string swells. The title track's in a good mood too, with spare bursts of keyboard figures over gently shifting grooves—the shaker's in charge here, phased and echoed, stitching the track's warm ambience into a danceable whole. Only "Old Joy" exudes typical Lawrencian mope—but as usual it's a mope laced with a kind of moody anticipation, like watching the sun go down over a vast cityscape, replaced by a field of neon specks in the darkness.
