Bergen Kjøtt is a 4 story factory building of 2000 square meters, converted into studios for nearly 300 artists and musicians. The public venue located on the 1st. floor [often referred to as 'andre etasje'] can facilitate up to 900 audience members, and has successfully hosted both art exhibitions, readings and concerts. The rehabilitation of Bergen Kjøtt was set up to provide an alternative space for professional artists and musicians in Bergen; to work, meet and collaborate, as well as initiate and organize various events at the 1st. floor venue. Key aims for the Bergen Kjøtt community includes professionalisation, exchange of knowledge and internationalization, and the daily production at Bergen Kjøtt makes the old factory a unique and active arena for artistic practice.
Given this environment, Bergen Kjøtt wants to challenge as well as participate in the development of Bergen as a national and international art scene.
The Bergen Kjøtt project was initialized in 2010 by Annine Birkeland, who still runs Bergen Kjøtt through Bergen Contemporary Art Project [BCAP]. During the following 2 years of it's existence - the interaction between international and local productions in art and music [by studio holders and outside participants] has proven to become the very foundation for it's continued existence. The construction work on the building is still in the commissioning phase - yet the official opening of Bergen Kjøtt [including the café and all other public areas] will take place in the autumn of 2012.
Bergen Kjøtt is located in Skuteviken, Bergen [Norway].
