- DJ Abyss is one of the most innovative DJ’s to come out of Germany in the last 20 years. Although the Frankfurter born DJ’s career has predominantly been behind the scenes, he has managed to accomplish himself internationally as one of the first East German DJs, alongside fellow Dresdner DJ Hardsquencer alias Hardy Hard. Back in 1991 in Frankfurt (Oder) he co-founded the first East German techno club “KamithHall”. Months later together with the Berlin techno legend Kid Paul, he began hosting Space Admission. With packed resident DJ line-ups the club soon became famous nationwide and in 1992 thousands of people from surrounding cities attended. In December 1992 he showed his skills in foreseeing trends by regularly booking the then unknown DJ Paul van Dyk to play Space Admission, eventually giving him residency spot alongside with himself and Kid Paul. Six months later Jens Mahlstedt, also relatively unknown at the time, was added to the line-up. With the growing popularity of the 4 DJs Space Admission would soon become one of the country’s most famous party concepts. Unfortunately in 1995 after 3 years the club residency came to an end, due to the DJ’s fully booked schedules and numerous international appearances. From then on Space Admission took place intermittently. In 1992 Abyss had also already established the magazine Ten Dance and was heavily engaged in editorial work. Within a short time the magazine became one of the leading German electronic music magazines. In 1994 his quick rise as a DJ catapulted him into the top-ten most popular German DJs. After a brief period as host at Berlin Walfisch and Praxis Dr McCoy from mid 1993 to beginning of 1994, he opened the Frankfurter Margin. After the lease ran out at the Frankfurter location, in 1995 he opened the club Marginal Frontier in Guben and became resident DJ at Tresor, Berlin. In 1998 he went back to the studio and produced an album together with the Berliner DJ and producer Jay Ray. The first single from the album was released in 1999 on the Berlin label MFS. In 1999 Abyss went back to the studio to concentrate on his solo work. The following year he set up his own label Strike Records, then in 2001 a second label Alternate, plus the revival of the already founded in 1991 label Grooves Inc. In 2002 to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Ten Dance a live mix of Abyss was released at the legendary Sage Club, Berlin recorded on 09.12.09. He was also responsible for the release of the “Best Of Ten Dance” CD compilation. Likewise in 2001, the tranquil producer released 7 Maxi singles, proving his musical versatility- ranging from Disco-House to Detroit Techno.
