Biografía

  • Annika Henderson is a musician, poet and artist who rose to fame as ANIKA with two highly acclaimed eponymous records (Recorded with Geoff Barrow of Portishead and his band Beak>, released on Invada and Stones Throw).
She is well known as a DJ too, hosts a radio program on BCR – Berlin Community Radio, is seen and heard in experimental cinema and collaborates with a variety of artists and musicians among them Jandek, Shackleton, Michael Rother (Neu!), Dave Clarke (Skint), Andreas Reihse of Kreidler, T.Raumschmiere (Sleeping Pills and Habits), Camera, Doireann O'Malley, Ricardo Domeneck, Stine Omar / Max Boss (EASTER), Phillip Geist (for a live video mapping project and soundtrack in Tehran, Iran) or Yann Tiersen. Last year Anika released a self-titled debut album with her Mexico City-based project, Exploded View, on US indie label Sacred Bones. This year, 2017, we see Anika release a string of new material comprising of two releases with new partners, Shackleton and Dave Clarke, and a follow-up EP from her Mexico-City based band, Exploded View. It begins in July with the release of ’Behind the Glass’; a full length EP with bass outsider Shackleton, to be released in July on Shackleton’s own Woe To The Septic Heart! label. The project will be unveiled at this year’s Atonal Festival in Berlin, with follow up performances in Osaka and Tokyo, Japan and Mira Festival, Barcelona. Second comes the release of the single, “I’m Not Afraid”; A collaboration with techno legend Dave Clarke, to be the second single of his long-awaited full-length LP ’The Desecration Of Desire’ due out in October (Skint Records 2017). The year ends with a follow-up EP from her Mexico City-based project, Exploded View, due out in November on Sacred Bones (US). Annika Henderson aka Anika (1987) Self-titled debut, Anika, produced by Geoff Barrow of Portishead. Released 31. Oct 2010 on Invada UK (UK, Europe, Australia) and 7. Dec 2010 on Stones Throw (US & Japan). Since, Anika has been extensively touring Europe and the USA, playing festivals such as Moogfest (US), Benicàssim (ES), ATP Alexandra Palace (UK), ATP Asheville (US), Field Day (UK), Paleo (CH), Art for Social Change (PL), Dour Festival (BE), Normal Festival (MEX) and St Malo (FR), The follow-up Self-titled EP was released in April 2013, exclusively on Stones Throw Records. There was a subsequent short tour, with a backing-band made up of rotating Berlin musicians. Festivals included: Foreign Affairs (with Kreidler as the backing band), Berlin, ATP (Curated by Yeah Yeah Yeahs), London and Distortion Festival, Copenhagen. “Political Journalist” isn’t a credential we usually have in musician’s bios, but this is exactly what Anika was doing while living between Berlin and Bristol earlier this year when she met Geoff Barrow. The producer was looking for a new singer to work with his band Beak>, and it was immediately clear they shared the same musical vision, including a love of punk, dub and 60s girl groups. Just a week later Anika and Beak> (Barrow, Billy Fuller and Matt Williams) went into the studio to begin recording material. The resulting album was recorded in twelve days, live, with the four together in one room. Dub with no overdubs. The collaboration is political, trashy, dub, punk, funk … a cohesive sound, and experience in uneasy listening. In the tradition of short-lived but deeply influential 99 Records and the NYC’s 80s No Wave nexus, the nine songs on Anika run the gamut from experimental rock (“Yang Yang”, “Officer Officer”) to covers of folk (“Masters of War”) and pop songs (“Terry”, “I Go to Sleep”), while showcasing reverb-drenched ancient drum machine rhythms.
