Biografía

  • Charolastra is a producer from Atlanta who occasionally tries to play keys that makes ambient, footwork, and other electronic music that will make you call your best friend and tell them how much they really mean to you.
Charolastra begins with a young boy forced to play piano by his parents at an early age. By the time he hit age 12 he decided he had enough and that the piano was “lame”. He joined a band with his friends playing bass and they were a tour de-force tearing through the Atlanta Private School scene, a true musical superpower to be reckoned with. In spite of this, he was plagued with uncertainty and a lack of direction. This only continued to grow in the following years during his time at University. Finally, towards the end of his time there, everything circled back to the upright piano that had been in his family for generations. The thing which he had once regarded as "lame” or “uncool” suddenly begins to afford him a great deal of joy and comfort during this time of uncertainty as a means of self-expression. His earliest recordings are one track piano pieces using a laptop microphone and while they are very low quality recordings and technically flawed to no end, the emotional turmoil is palpable. Coincidentally, it was around this time he discovered the unique rhythms of producers such as Time Wharp, Machinedrum, and the Teklife crew of Chicago. They all sparked something in him that completely changed his viewpoint of electronic music, which up until then had been jaded by the “bro-step” movement that took over college scenes everywhere at the time. As the thirst for more quality content grew, he also was greatly moved by the more ambient pieces and film scores of Cliff Martinez and Angelo Badalamenti as well as the imagery of their visual counterparts, Nicolas Winding Refn and David Lynch. Charolastra channels the spirit of these artists through danceable beats that also have a high emotional register, which is always most notable in the presence of that upright piano, the cornerstone where it all began.
