Clyde Beats

Biografía

  • Clyde Beats is a Derby native and is Clive Astin’s aural alter-ego. He’s a Music Producer, Singer, Copywriter and Teacher, satisfied only when marching to the beat of a different drum: a very jerky yet meticulously constructed drum.
Back in the UK after two years of living in China, Clyde Beats' second album, ‘Hyper Reality 2: An English Gentleman’ is incoming on Atjazz Record Company. Pharoah Sanders, Milt Jackson, Herb Alpert and Bob James: they’re some of Clyde Beats' influences who might all derive familiarity from the grainy hooks and filtered sample-based layers emanating from his amalgamation of styles and sounds. That is, until the unmistakable influences of The Bomb Squad, The Clash, Ali Shaheed Muhammad, and Dj Premier, to name just some, beam through, all topped and tailed with a heavy serving of ‘Dilla Time’. From cultivating his craft in the 90s using his treasured Akai samplers and Atari ST, and following gruelling charity shop vinyl dives, the first wave of Clyde saw the release of his debut album through Mantis Recordings. Entitled ‘Hyper Reality’, the LP hatched the Hip-House classic ‘Serve It Up feat. Capital A’: to this day a regularly referenced and often-licensed tune. It also showcased the anti-war house cut, ‘Roll of the Beast’. Out in 2009, this tune was recently reanimated as a vinyl-only release, thanks to it going viral and remaining a regular in many-a-DJ’s set. Both incarnations of the release feature remix work from fellow Derby-based producer and owner of the eponymously named Atjazz Record Company, which is the home of Clyde’s releases. When he’s not crafting beats so wonky that the snares and kicks could theoretically be homed on separate records, he’s crafting copywriting for UK and Chinese organisations, teaching English to overseas students, and making headway with the Mandarin language: It’s a passion that follows closely behind Hip Hop, Asian cuisine and an appreciation of avant-garde humour; hence the phrase ‘Hyper Reality’. “The term ‘An English Gentleman’ is a reference to the distinctive UK sound and a play on the Britishness of characters like James Bond. It’s also how an overseas girlfriend humorously, yet unconvincingly referred to me in the company of her friends”, explained Clyde Beats. The second wave of Clyde Beats is now collecting pace. Following a hiatus that included parenthood, Clyde Beats steps back into the future and picks up where he left off. ‘Hyper Reality 2: An English Gentleman’ revitalises Clyde Beats' signature non-quantised beats and unorthodox songwriting. This time, the sound may be just as deviant, and just as soulful, yet it’s more detailed and far more refined than before. Today, Clyde Beats is audibly comfortable in his musical skin, knowing who he is as an artist, and this shines throughout ‘Hyper Reality 2: An English Gentleman’, available on Atjazz Record Company.
