- A collective of like minded people in the Toronto area who blend the DJ paradigm, production, live performance, and musicianship - live.band.remixCo-Op was inadvertently conceived on a very late night in mid 2008. Not knowing what to expect, we planned a jam session intending to combine turntablism and techno. After corralling some gear, many hours of tooling, troubleshooting and moving stuff around in our sorry excuse for a studio, we finally fired up the decks. At some point, albeit fleeting, we locked down a mix married with scratches and flares. We encountered a moment of clarity - a visceral musical experience akin to emotionally induced shivers and the sublime feeling of enlightenment. The combination of the traditional DJ paradigm and live performance, catalyzed by cooperative expression, created something new. We knew we were onto something and the ideas started flowing. Co-Op, as the name implies, is a horizontally integrated collective of like-minded music enthusiasts. Performance configuration is elastic and intentionally designed to challenge the traditional Live PA and DJ paradigms typically used for electronic, dance-oriented music. Live instruments (oud, guitar, and synthesizers) by Karim and improvised arrangements by Oreste coalesce into an unpredictable expression of sound loosely defined by house, techno, and minimal.
