As a relative ‘late bloomer’ at the age of 24, Dean Millson discovered dance music after being held at the mercy of Laurent Garnier during one of the last of Melbourne’s much loved Docks parties late in 2000. In the next six months however he became immersed not so much with techno, but rather the progressive sounds that had taken a stronghold on Melbourne’s scene courtesy of local DJ’s such as Sean Quinn, Kasey Taylor, Phil K (not forgetting expat Anthony Pappa) and one up and comer named Aaron Roach. Over the course of 2001, during many an early morning recovery sessions at Tranzfusion.net’s HQ in Melbourne, Dean was drawn to have the occasional spin behind the decks and it was not long until he’d progressed from the occasional attempt at mixing every few weeks to investing in a pair of his own technics and making weekly pilgrimages to begin his own record collection. It was during one of those early morning sessions that Dean and Tranzfusion.net’s founder Derrick Dennis began toying with the idea of running their own monthly party. They both agreed that the progressive scene in Melbourne needed a more intimate night that was more about having fun than necessarily the most upfront tracks of the moment, which might ultimately help some of the less established DJ’s around town break out of their bedrooms and into the main rooms. Eventually they pulled together a small group of passionate DJs of varying experience and on a rainy Thursday night in late December 2001 they introduced ‘Private Function’ to Melbourne’s progressive community—and well there’s not really any other way to put it other than the rest, they say, is history. Private Function has slowly grown into a Melbourne institution playing host to a vast array of the amazing local talent including Luke Chable, Ivan Gough, Jono Fernandez, Chris Meehan, Keltec and Managan, Scrambler (Live) and Phil K (as well as interstate DJ/Producer Vance Musgrove and American Producer/DJ Steve Porter). As Private Function has cemented itself into Melbourne’s clubbing history, Dean—now 27—has developed into one of Melbourne’s most promising up and coming DJs. Along with delivering the goods at PF each month, in late 2003 things were taken up a level, being offered guest spots at various established club nights around Melbourne, including being given the opportunity to support Global Underground’s Dave Seaman and Nick Warren in separate gigs late in 2003 and early 2004 respectively. Dean has developed a reputation for being extremely versatile—being able to play both the main room and the back room—playing a mix of both progressive house and breaks. He currently lists his favourite producers as Luke Chable, Phil K, Matthew Dekay and Steve Porter, and labels such as Extrama/Deep, Bedrock, SAW, Electrofly and Melbourne’s EQ Grey. With the logical progression being production, Dean has began a collaboration in 2003 with close friend, fellow PF resident and his original local mentor Aaron Roach—which with things going to plan, should bear some interesting fruit in 2004.
