Biografía

  • Radiating a restrained but rhythmic and soulful energy, DJ/Producer/Remixer Deap Soma aims to reignite the fire of house music that blazed through the 90’s and built the foundation for the world of house and electronic music we see today.
Deap Soma Luis Dequesada, better known to his fans in New York City and around the country as Deap Soma, has spent his musical life immersing himself in the raw, primordial sounds the house music pantheon of the past had to offer. Understanding the transformation of tracks over time from underground to mainstream did not dampen Deap Soma’s drive to make his musical mark; it invigorated him to walk a line balancing the respect and reverence for the underground with the relevance of the mainstream to form his signature sound. Growing up in New York City making hip-hop beats with friends, and coming from a family rife with musicians from Cuban percussionists to house music DJ’s, Deap Soma knew it was only a matter of time before the confluence of tastes, genres, sounds, and energy blended together to create the deep, techy, tribal sound emanating from his tracks and sets. Starting with his first single Engo through his latest dub of Haldo’s Superstition out on Oscar P’s Open Bar Music, Deap Soma lives up to his name sake, which roughly translates to “underground soul.” Through his sets and tracks, the rising tide of ethereal synths, the thump of powerful tech patterns, and tribal drums connect you to a certain natural rhythm, and transports you to a world in which the past is both the present and a template for reimagining future. Pairing with some of the most well-respected names in New York City, Deap Soma has already blazed a trail for his inimitable beats, mesmerizing the audiences of some of the world’s highest rated clubs like Manhattan’s Cielo and Space Ibiza NY, or Brooklyn’s Output, not to mention his number of more intimate performances at TBA Brooklyn and Analog BKNY. He’s shared the stage with some of house music’s rising stars, including Oscar G, Codes, Ant LaRock, and the RVDIOVCTIVE artist collective. With his sights set on evolving from a transformative sound to a transformative experience, Deap Soma looks to the future with a vision to embody the concept of an underground soul, drawing in those seeking the same, through sound, through dance, and through experience.
