Biografía

  • An avid partygoer, Jessica Unger aka JayU made her DJ debut in 2021 and has been non-step ever since. As Shut The Front Door's newest resident, she always brings that main room energy
JayU's sprawling sound stems from years spent on dancefloors across the UK, absorbing chunky bass, jackin' house, summery garage, rollicking techno and the most niche shades of electronic music. Those days of partying have influenced her unpretentious and genre-bending approach to DJing today, which is why the Shut The Front Door and Voices Radio resident DJ has earned recognition as a glowing talent to watch. A set from the London-based artist can go in any direction, from hardcore rave to sparkly disco, always delivered with JayU-stamped energy, aka A Big Vibe. Playing Glastonbury, Queens Yard Summer Festival, Westival, Night Tales, The Quarry, The Cause and Oslo alongside acts like Moodymann, Nick Höppner, O'Flynn, Joe Goddard, Chaos in the CBD, Arielle Free, LF System and Ferreck Dawn, JayU has followed a swift rise since starting out in 2020, and rightfully so. JayU taught herself to mix during lockdown, pursuing the task as a creative outlet and tool for managing anxiety. Experimenting with a wide range of sounds, she soon developed her own — and now signature — way of blending, no matter the genre. When clubs re-opened in July 2021, JayU agreed to play at Brixton Jamm, where she met the co-founder of Shut The Front Door [STFD], Kyle Parsley. As 2022 approached, Kyle offered JayU a residency with STFD, adding to her flourishing profile. The pair soon realised their natural flair for vibey B2Bs, going on to co-host a monthly show on Voices Radio called 'Open Format', where they continue to bounce off one another's carefree energy and all-encompassing track selections. JayU has Type One diabetes, so in the summer of 2023, she co-founded Type One Community with Kyle Parsley and Sophia Violet [Girls Don't Sync]. It's a platform for ravers with Type One diabetes and other hidden health conditions to exchange ideas, support one another and share experiences. The trio are working on launching Whatsapp groups, club nights, and panels to help raise awareness of hidden health conditions in the broader music scene. On the side, JayU co-runs the ad-hoc party series Bentley, with all profits going to LGBTQ+ charities. She also occasionally plays B2B and produces with her pal Conor Peacock under the alias of Captain Daddy. Holding down two DJ residencies, Type Work Community and Bentley has allowed JayU to come into her own as a skilled DJ — a credit to her love for connecting with others and her bubbly nature, which goes hand-in-hand with her talent.
