Biografía

  • Chilean DJ/producer DJ Raff crafts lysergic, low-slung dance music to lose yourself to.
A heady mix of percussive patterns and hypnotic melodies laced together with samples from across the Afro-Latin diaspora, DJ Raff’s sound is rooted locally but resonates globally. As such, DJ Raff describes himself as a relator - or sonic storyteller - speaking in a “musical language” of kaleidoscopic rhythms and atmospheric instrumental moods that draw on myriad influences from the Andean regions of Chile, Peru, Bolivia and beyond. Now based in London, DJ Raff has established himself as one of the most prolific producers on the scene, releasing fifteen singles and remixes in the last two years, and amassing support from BBC 6 Music’s Gilles Peterson and Tom Ravenscroft among many others. His 2018 EP Resistencia and subsequent remixes were released on Big In Japan and featured reworks from regular collaborators Dengue Dengue Dengue and El Buho. It confirmed DJ Raff’s place alongside the pan-global electronics of On The Corner Records and Nicola Cruz, the latter of whom cites DJ Raff as a formative influence on his own music. With a show on Balamii Radio in Peckham, South London, DJ Raff has honed a seamless sound that weaves an innovative use of samples and edits into a single sonic tapestry. In his DJ performances, DJ Raff blurs the lines between selection and live improvisation, scouring the internet for the new music, never content to just play a track without tweaking it to the texture of the whole. He has performed at festivals around the world, including Sonar, Mutek, Lollapalooza, Great Escape and institutions like Tate Modern in London. DJ Raff began his musical journey aged 12, with a double tape deck and an old turntable. Inspired by the likes of Beastie Boys and Public Enemy, he went digging for records in Santiago flea markets and flipped samples into loops and beats that would form the backbone of the Chilean hip-hop scene in the 1990s. Going on to become one of the most respected DJs and producers in Latin America and touring extensively across the continent, DJ Raff evolved into electronic territory, releasing shape-shifting albums on Mutante Discos, Nacional Records and his own Pirotecnia label. Founded with his partner in 2014, Pirotecnia is at the forefront of the Chilean electronic music scene - a vibrant and radical underground movement emanating from the capital Santiago. The label has released close to 50 records in seven years, including music from the likes of Valesuchi, Fantasna and Fernanda Arrau, as well as a series of game-changing compilations described as “a guide to new electronic sounds of Santiago”. No stranger to mainstream success, in 2012, DJ Raff’s track ‘Latino And Proud’ was featured on EA Sports Fifa 2012 video game and was then subsequently chosen as the theme tune for Comedy Central’s award-winning TV show Broad City. A tireless innovator who has helped build not one but two scenes in his native Chile, DJ Raff is on a new journey. The time has come to join him. Anton Spice
