At age 24, only three years a DJ, Gare L has already become a much in demand sound spinner and a prolific producer of his own tracks. With releases on at least three busy dance music labels, including his own label, Loft Boom Records, Gare L is ready to join the top ranks of dance music makers. Indeed, with 27 tracks already released and available at Beatport.com, Gare L has attracted support from many big-name DJs, including , Alex Posada, Dsan Powell, David G-Tronic, Jesse Perez, Sergio Santos, Tamer Malki, and Ivano Bellni. More are sure to follow. Born in Lima, Peru, Gare L, whose full name is Ludena, came to the U.S. at age 8, to Miami. As Miami was then (and continues to be) a major dance music city, it wasn’t long before Gare L discovered the dance music sound. He was just 19 years old when friends suggested they visit Club Space, one of the city’s major dance clubs, for the evening. And so began the making of Gare L. “it was good, man,” says he. “The whole situation, the vibe. The DJ !” Every week after that, Gare went back – not to dance but to watch the DJ. “No more dancing for me,” he says. “I anted to learn everything that DJ was doing. I wanted to do it myself.” Not long after, Gare got his first gig as a DJ. “I knew the promoter at Club Mekka,” he remembers. “He knew that I was interested, and so he scheduled me to play the last set of the weekend. Two hours ! I liked it. “Other promoters saw that I was into it and gave me gigs at the clubs they worked. And all the time I was learning – Miami has a LOT of DJs, so I learned a lot.” The first major step in a DJ’s emergence into prominence is to obtain a residency. Are L was given his first residency almost right away, in his first year spinning, at Club Mecca. Now firmly established, he was soon DJ-ing at all of Miami’s major dance clubs. Three years ago, Gare decided to reposition himself entirely: he moved to Boston, where he had friends. “They told me that the city was open to new sounds and badly needed a new infusion of young DJs,” he tells it, “and so I came. I met Tamer Malki in Boston, and then Brunno Santos, who even then was fast becoming a major local DJ. Santos got me a gig at RISE, the city’s top after hours club. “Well, I liked RISE and they liked me, so I played there again, and the at Therapy in Providence. Now we’re doing gigs at the Sunday Groove event at District, near South Station in Boston.” Gare L is working now on a new EP, of four tracks. The Ep will be titled NEGATIVE TO POSITIVE. “It’s going to be more an underground sound, between tech house and minimal.
