Biografía

  • Interstate (aka producer Mike Burns and DJ Mark Lewis) first made a name for themselves back in 2005 when their breakthrough track "I Found U" [Armada] took the dance world by storm. Since then their original productions and remixes have been licensed..
It’s not often that you find your productions caught in a stiff bidding war between dance music’s top labels for international release, but when you are one of the hottest new electronic acts on the scene, this shouldn’t come as a surprise. Flashback to 2005 when LA based trance outfit Interstate exploded onto the scene, creating a frenzy of excitement among industry execs and fans alike with their breathtaking breakthrough single ‘I Found U.’ While the standout track quickly found a home at Armin Van Buuren’s Netherlands-based label, Armada Music, it was the skilled teamwork of veteran DJ Mark Lewis & his production partner Mike Burns that brought Interstate to the forefront of the global trance scene. Flashback again to 2000, to Burns’ Mixxboxx recording studio off LA’s Melrose Ave., where a mutual friend first introduced the two. A shared love affair with electronic music sparked an instant connection, and it wasn’t long before their first experiment together, “Infrared” landed on Paul Oakenfold’s Underground Sound of America E.P. It quickly became apparent that Lewis’ unique style of deep, sexy progressive house was the perfect compliment to Burn’s love of dreamy vocal trance music. What resulted was a beautiful synergy of sounds that has come to define the duo’s melodic productions. As Burns describes it “ Interstate is about a vibe, a feeling of celebration and joy, a rapture, captured sonically through music. Adds Lewis, “My philosophy has always been to celebrate life through dance. It’s a dogma that has proven to be quite effective in my musical production. Really, we’re just doing our thing, Mike and I have great chemistry.” Interstate quickly made the most of their new found notoriety from ‘I found U” by joining forces that same year with Markus Schulz, co-producing “Peaches N Cream,” a featured track off Schulz’ debut artist album. The following year, they released their follow-up single to “I Found U.” “Remember Me” (also on Armada) went on to win an equal if not bigger amount of international acclaim and was even hailed as “trance in it’s purest form” by none other than legendary DJ Paul Van Dyk. While over the years they’ve collectively nurtured a very successful musical partnership and friendship, individually, Lewis & Burns have resumes that read like a dream. Back in 2000, UK born Lewis founded Mixology Inc., an LA-based production company, record label and marketing firm with an A-list catalog of clients, including Bacardi, House Of Blues, JW Marriott Hotel, Red Bull, World Famous Nikki Beach, Ministry of Sound, Global Underground, Cream & Perfecto Records. As a producer, Lewis has remixed Sean Paul, Kinky, Erasure and Chaka Kahn and has produced numerous mixed compilations including Mixology [Topaz], ICU- Sessions Six [ICU Records], Global Frequencies Tokyo [Phatt Phunk], House of Love 2 [VRG], A Taste of Logic-One [V Wax], and Mo’ House Yo’ Mama [Moonshine]. A leading figure in the industry for 20 years and running, Lewis is no stranger to globe trotting. Between a busy tour schedule that has taken him around the world with legends like Carl Cox and Paul Oakenfold, Lewis has also found time to entertain celebrity clients, spinning for the likes of Elton John, Wolfgang Puck & Rob Lowe. While in LA, Mark has enjoyed acting as music conductor to designers during LA’s annual Fashion Week runway events and also plays regularly for tinsel town’s elite at his various residencies at Aqua Sundays, Ecco Hollywood, Crocker Club and Playhouse. While Lewis’ love for DJ’ing made him a name on the international club circuit, Burns decided to keep things local when he arrived in LA from his native Miami in 1999. It wasn’t long before he ingratiated himself in the Hollywood scene with his original productions- Burns’ music has appeared in both films and television, including Gus Van Sant’s Speedway Junkie, E!’s hit TV series “The Anna Nicole Show,’ ESPN’s first realty series “Beg, Borrow & Deal,” their quiz show “Hearsay” and the hit sports TV Talk show ‘Rome is Burning” which is now in it’s 1000th episode. Burns is currently music supervising a 10 feature film slate through on Lionsgate. In addition to taking time out to gig together with Lewis alongside such heavyweights as Paul Oakenfold, Armin van Buuren & George Acosta, Burns also found time to score remix credits for Gus Gus, Roman Anthony (in collaboration with Dave Dresden of Gabriel & Dresden), R&B artist Nick Acosta and Alanis Morisette. An ideal moniker for an artistic collaboration based on the unique interplay between Burn’s ‘band’ mentality style of song writing & producing and Lewis’ ‘beat’ mentality of mixing & cutting, Interstate has enjoyed international fame with their alluring melodies and universal appeal. Collectively their releases have been licensed to over 80 trance music compilations around the world, including Paul Oakenfold’s Grammy nominated Creamfields album. Flash forward to 2011. After a few relatively quiet years focusing on their own projects, Lewis & Burns are back in the studio doing what they do best, eager to re-kindle the flame that was Interstate. Their more recent release “Love Freak” was signed to a worldwide Revlon campaign featuring Jessica Biel earlier this year, while their newest work “Gforce” has been licensed for a worldwide Campaign for Dell Computers new laptop for DJs. Hitting the ground running, Interstate is well positioned for a major comeback, with new productions already in the works and a major licensing deal that will see some of their tracks hit the big screen in upcoming months.
