Jake Reif is a lifelong multi-instrumentalist, song-writer and a native New Yorker, who spent some musically formative years in the Midwest, drawing major influence from the Chicago and Detroit warehouse scene of the era. As if that background wasn't foundation enough, upon his return to NYC in the mid 90s, he navigated his way into the record industry, working at the legendary Sonic Groove record store and Syntax Music Distribution. He also held residencies in various venues around Europe during his tenure overseas. The different project names and collaborations, under which he thrives, convey one common message - Jake’s fluid vision of music and his remarkable versatility. Savage Hymn, his project with Chicago House legend Mystic Bill, whose first single "Indecision" is heralded as a modern take on traditional Chicago Acid House. The collaboration between Jake and Bill has also resulted in a highly acclaimed EP on Snuff Trax, which showcased Jake’s immense talent as a remixer (‘U Won’t C me’ Jake’s Savage Acid Re-Dub). That remix is still in rotation amongst elite DJs the world over, most recently appearing on a Fact Magazine mix by Kim Ann Foxman. With a full EP completed for the follow up, Savage Hymn will be returning to record shelves in early 2017. Upsetting Keys, his project with Reade Truth, began almost 20 years ago when they had their first meeting of the minds at Reade’s infamous Zone of FX studio. Each of them expressing in a unique, uncompromising style a frustration with the music scene, politics and life in general. Regularly intense, 24-hour studio sessions resulted in the inimitable sound-scapes that they've come to be known for. In 1999, their first release came in the form of a remix on Reade's Why2K? EP. In 2001, their debut EP "Empathy" became a silent masterpiece, inhibited only by sound quality and availability. This record gained cult status amongst obscure electronic music collectors the world over; finally, in 2015, Empathy was remastered and made available again. With a virtual treasure-trove of unreleased recordings from the late 90s / early 00s, look out for an onslaught of forthcoming Keys material which will be released on NYC startup Fleur Du Mal, Path Records and more. Device Control, another major accomplishment of Jake's as his first solo effort, is an alias under which he will soon release a crushing EP on Ron Morelli’s L.I.E.S. imprint; due out fall 2016. This project is very much inspired by his roots in Punk and Industrial music, but still closely tethered to his warehouse Techno pedigree. In addition to the forthcoming L.I.E.S. EP, expect to see Device Control deliver a series of edits on Path Records' new sub-label Effective Weapons as well as a follow up EP and remixes done in this vein in 2016 and 2017. As a selector, Jake was born in a grimy warehouse behind a wall of speakers; regardless of genre, he kills the old way. His vast record collection spans everything from early Chicago and Detroit classics and obscurities to Disco, Italo, New Wave, Punk, Industrial and beyond. With a long enough time slot, Jake has been known to traverse all of these styles in a single outing as true veterans DJs are known to do.
