Biografía

  • Electronic music producer, record collector, DJ, and engineer based in Manchester, UK
Inspired by late night clubbing excursions to underground institutions such as Back To Basics, Bugged Out, The Orbit, Tribal Sessions and Fabric, James began collecting records as a teenager, always on the lookout for the tracks he was hearing out in the clubs. A move to Manchester to study Engineering at university saw a huge turning point - immersed in a city rich with a then underground electronic music scene saw his social circle of likeminded people increase and soon became a regular fixture DJing at house parties and student bars around the city. Naturally things progressed to production, striving to recreate the sounds of the records he was playing out every weekend and set up his first record label (Drenched Recordings) aged just 18, initially as an outlet for his own early productions but after a series of successful releases was soon attracting attention from DJs and producers on a global scale. Key releases for the label later came from Jay Tripwire, Patrick Turner, Samuli Kemppi & Alan Barratt to critical acclaim from the early pioneers of the tech house scene of the late 90s & early 00s. James's track 'Heavy' (as Feline 9) was later licensed to Joris Voorn's groundbreaking Balance Mix CD Compilation, setting a new standard for studio based mixes. Distributor problems subsequently forced the label to close and James took to focusing on DJing, securing residencies across his hometown of Manchester regularly playing in venues such as Sankeys, The Music Box and The Corner and making guest appearances at various small clubs across the UK & USA. He's spent the last decade further refining his sound, shifting away from the deeper house influences of past to a tougher more stripped back sound, focusing on analog recording techniques to bring his productions to life outside of the box in a time dominated by uninspiring loops & bland sample packs. His more recent releases have caught the ear of a wide range of DJs making their way to the record boxes and USB sticks of the likes of Carl Cox, George Fitzgerald, Sasha, John Digweed, Oxia, Laura Jones, Omid 16b, Groove Armada, Joris Voorn, Huxley, Danny Howells amongst many others. James is also one of the key people behind the new social music streaming startup, Evermix - allowing DJs to record their set direct to an app on their phone using a small piece of hardware called MixBox. Sets can then be uploaded directly from the phone to the site and pushed to fans & followers who can connect with each other and share their own stories from the night. Despite still being in its infancy Evermix is gaining huge support from top flight DJs such as Pig&Dan, Doorly, Solardo, Leftwing & Kody, Alex Arnout, Josh Butler, Miguel Campbell, Gordon City and 100s more.
