Biografía

  • Jason Patrick (Chicago, 4Trk, Gynoid Audio, Impact Mechanics, KMS), Dj / producer from Detroit currently residing in Chicago.
Jason Patrick (Chicago, 4Trk, Gynoid Audio, Impact Mechanics, KMS) Jason Patrick’s lineage connects two of the most influential cities in electronic music: Chicago and Detroit. His unique sonic fingerprint combines influences from both cities, honing in on that unmistakable Detroit spirit, while harmoniously incorporating a subtle influence from the Windy City. As a highly-skilled, dynamic selector, he’s been a resident at Chicago’s infamous Spybar with regular jaunts across North America and over in Europe as well. Equally adept in the studio, he channels years spent refining his technical skills into tracks that have landed on labels such as KMS, Gynoid Audio, 4 Track and his own Klectik label. Equipped with deep knowledge, superlative skills, and a progressive driven attitude towards his work, Jason Patrick is one of the lynchpins of Chicago techno. Currently well established in Chicago, Jason lends his wealth of experience to help guide younger artists and promoters whenever possible. As a youngster himself he found his own way, nurtured on a diet of hip hop, new wave, Nine Inch Nails and Detroit’s influential New Dance Show, among other sounds. His introduction to electronic music came through bumpin’ Chicago house, a la DJ Sneak and other similar artists. But once he started to buy records, he naturally gravitated towards techno. Around the same time Detroit’s electronic music festival launched, a serendipitous occurrence that gave him the opportunity to immerse himself in his city’s vibrant scene, witnessing performances from the genre’s pioneers first-hand. He became a full-time student of the school of techno, learning all he could about the roots and galvanising his love for the music, while also honing his craft. In fact, he practiced for two years before venturing out of his bedroom to play his first rave. This level of patience and quality control remains steadfast as part of Jason’s outlook to this day and this is also something he instills in the younger artists he works with. After picking up his first drum machine and taking a deep dive into the world of production, learning all he could with virtually no assistance, Jason’s first official release landed on his own Klectik imprint in 2007. Since it was conceived Klectik has unleashed 33 releases, nine of which have been pressed to vinyl. In recent years he’s been working closely with DJ Hyperactive on his 4 Track label by utilising his expertise to help manage the infamous DJ’s outlet. 2007 proved to be a pivotal year for Jason, not only launching his own imprint with his debut release, but also packing up his belongings to relocate to Chicago. In the years that have passed he has fully integrated into the city’s electronic music culture, forming close bonds with many of its most prolific artists and becoming a renowned DJ and producer in his own right. He soon became a resident at Spybar and moved to the forefront of the scene, appearing alongside many of the world’s best-known selectors and working with local promoters to curate and organise several key events. As well as keeping busy on home turf, Jason travels across the USA regularly, hitting cities like Los Angeles, New York, Miami and Detroit. He’s also been booked to play in Europe, appearing at Tresor in Berlin and Plastic in Milan. In 2015 he released the Grazed EP with Kevin Saunderson’s KMS label, a move that connected him back to his roots in Detroit and gave him a newfound confidence with his productions. The two-track release was the perfect springboard for Jason to take his music to the next level, epitomising his hypnotic approach and innate ability to cultivate mesmerising atmospherics. His informal production approach has led to several well-received releases, including acid-tinged ‘TimeFlex’, which picked up a positive 8/10 review in Mixmag’s August 2019 issue. Jason’s releases have included tracks that have been played by Richie Hawtin, Scuba, Dave Clarke and Ben Sims. Sound-wise, much of his inspiration comes from big city life and how it lives and breathes as one organism. This comes through in Jason’s music which constantly shifts, evolves and is full of nuance. Today, he is an intrinsic part of Chicago’s Astral Undertones collective, performing as their resident DJ, while also passing on his extensive knowledge to the team. Currently in the studio, he works with up and coming producers to impart his studio know-how, gained through two decades of dedication to exploring sound and frequency in great detail. In doing so, he is ensuring the next generation of Chicago’s electronic music community are equipped with the knowledge they need to take the scene forward and continue the legacy laid down by the pioneers from both Detroit and Chicago. Still driven by an all-consuming passion for techno, Jason Patrick continues to give his all to electronic music culture. Intent on bolstering his international credentials, while also guiding the new generation of artists and promoters in Chicago, he’s as enthusiastic today as he was when he first got started.
