Biografía

  • With a musical manifesto derived from the deep, symbolic lessons learnt from a parrot in the rainforest, Melbourne based song selector Jmcee brightens his dancefloors in a way which manages to outcolour an already overcoloured habitat.
Born into the opiate encrusted tiara of Australia's rock scene, Jmcee became way too quickly overexposed to the varied sights and vigilante sounds of St. Kilda in the late 80s. Its with this unique childhood origin and with these unenviable roots that his well-known transcendental genre blending can begin to be understood. A promising music journalist with Beat Magazine before jogging his first wheel five years ago, Jmcee opted to approach his sets with his cornerstone philosophy of how much the "now" is indebted to the "then". Of how much the evolution of modern-day dance music owes to the environment it came from. An older environment he sees to be firmly seeded in the pioneering days of early blues, funk and soul. Weaving offcut samples like afro american slave and spiritual rhythms into a tapestry of jagged, dry percussion based tech, a Jmcee set bridges the oft neglected gap between todays 4/4 and yesterdays groove. Holding down long serving weekly residencies at both the highly regarded Circus Sundays and the notorious Killing Time monday morning breakfast club, Jmcee proves hes not just some retro revival gimmick and, from Essential Intention's outdoor parties in Byron Bay, to supporting Melbourne's local funk bands for DJ Manchild's (PBS) "the funk is downstairs" nights at the Prince of Wales, Jmcee's twisted celebration of the tribal heritage of modern music has proven to only become more and more popular. Keeping himself busy with further forays into the deeper New Orleans voodoo rhythms of which he sees as the great grandfather of modern techno, Jmcee now boasts 3 weekly all-night-long residencies where he delves into the genres these roots inspired to an ever increasingly cult fanbase. On top of that, Jmcee's growing reputation within the tightly knit Melbourne techno movement has seen him land local support slots for Oliver Huntemann, Stimming, Niko Schwind, Madmotormiquel plus many more in the past year alone. With further bookings for some major festivals in the Summer 2015/16 pipeline, where such an eclectically driven Dj will end up is still anyone's guess. The only thing clear is that his love and deep respect for natural roots grooves and and their current day offspring will become only further interconnected and merged within his music. Much like parrots in the rainforest who, like most exotic bird's camouflage, take on and reflect the visual attributes of their homelands. Jmcee's sound champions only what was already there. He takes the essential aural features of dance music's place of origin and molds it into a single symbolic identity. An identity, like the parrot, that over time comes to epitomise the whole exotic nature of its place origin.
